There are over 1.5 million persons with disabilities in Austria. Only a small percentage of disabilities are congenital or the result of an accident or occupational disease.
The largest share by far is caused by illness. Disabilities also frequently affect older persons.

In the media sector, accessibility means that persons with disabilities can find, access and use media in the generally used manner, without added difficulty and generally without assistance.
The main purpose of accessible audiovisual media is to enable persons with disabilities to participate in audiovisual information and entertainment programming and services on an equal footing and to provide an accessible film experience that is as similar as possible to that of persons without impairments. Audio description is not only available for films, but also for live events, such as entertainment shows or sporting events. For audiovisual media, the main options are:
Austrian Disability Council
The Austrian Disability Council is an umbrella organisation representing over 80 member organisations in Austria. As an advocacy organisation for 1.4 million persons with disabilities in Austria, the Disability Council supports the interests of persons with disabilities at the national and international levels.
Disability Equality Act
The Federal Disability Equality Act prohibits the discrimination of persons with disabilities in large areas of daily life.
Web Accessibility Act
The Web Accessibility Act establishes accessibility requirements for federal websites and mobile applications.
Disability Action Plan
The National Disability Action Plan is the federal government's long-term strategy for implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
